Agritourism insurance
To make their farming businesses sustainable, innovative producers are creating new agritourism activities for farm visitors. Many of these activities are so new that they do not have an established track-record for safety and risk management. Because of the uncertainty with these activities, insurance providers consider them to be high risk. Recent changes in the insurance industry have meant that many insurance companies are hesitant to provide insurance for high-risk activities. As a result, some farmers have been refused insurance when they applied to renew their contract, while others have experienced a dramatic increase in their liability insurance costs.
Capri Insurance and BCATA are offering a solution for these businesses.  This insurance program is open for all businesses who achieve BC AgriTourism Accredited status. To become accredited, your agritourism business must meet nine quality standards:
•  All legal requirements and all necessary licences and permits for the business have been obtained.
•  Where food is prepared or served, the owner, manager and one person on shift have Food Safe training.
•  Where alcohol is served, the owner, manager and all staff who serve alcohol have Serving it Right training.
•  Business hours are posted and adhered to.
•  The business has insurance, including public liability.
•  Current marketing materials accurately describe business.
•  Clean toilet facilities with hand washing facilities are available to customers.
•  Hand washing facilities with soap and clean paper towels are available.
•  Areas accessible to guests are well maintained and free from hazards.
We also encourage accredited businesses to meet our recommended standards so that they can work together to raise the quality of agritourism in BC. It is our insistence on quality that makes it possible for us to offer the insurance program to accredited businesses at a competitive rate.
